Diagnosis
Treatment begins with diagnosis and this is usually done by fine needle aspiration (FNA). FNA is a method of removing small amounts of tumour from the patient and examining them microscopically.

If diagnosis is confirmed to be Burkitt’s, treatment can then begin and this covers three distinct phases:

Induction – In patient Lasts 6 weeks, during which time the patient is in hospital
Consolidation – In patient Begins 2 weeks after Induction and lasts 4 weeks
Maintenance – Out patient Begins 4 weeks after consolidation and lasts 2 years

Chemotherapy, being designed to kill cells, doesn’t differentiate between good and bad cells. The children therefore require a period of time to recover in between chemotherapy sessions.
